Suvo Strategic Minerals Ltd (ASX:SUV) executive chair Aaron Banks joins Proactive’s Tylah Tully to discuss the company’s successful transformation of zero-carbon nickel slag into high-strength, low-carbon cement. Suvo’s tested three samples at Indonesia's Makassar State University (UNM), yielding impressive results, with one sample achieving 37.5 megapascals (Mpa) of strength after only seven days. This comes after Suvo signed a cooperation agreement with PT Huadi Bantaeng Industrial Park (PT HBIP) in Indonesia, potentially leading to a commercial arrangement. The agreement involved Suvo's subsidiary, Climate Tech Cement Pty Ltd, incorporating industrial slag by-product from PT Huadi Nickel-Alloy Indonesia (PT HNI), a nickel pig iron operation, into its geopolymer mix-design. The aim is to produce an eco-friendly geopolymer cement as an alternative to traditional clinker-based cement. Cement production is responsible for around 8% of global greenhouse gas emissions, emitting around 3.2 billion tonnes of CO2 annually. Suvo's innovation in turning nickel slag into a low-carbon cement alternative offers significant potential in reducing the cement industry's carbon footprint. Banks highlighted the success of the initial trials and outlined the company’s goal of producing an environmentally friendly alternative to traditional Portland cement. The nickel slag, supplied by PT Huadi Nickel-Alloy Indonesia (PT HNI), one of Indonesia’s largest nickel producers, has a zero-carbon footprint. This circular economy solution reduces waste from nickel production and lowers emissions in the cement industry. Suvo now plans further testing in collaboration with UNM, evaluating other properties of the cement, including slump and setting times.
