HANetf product specialist Harry Halewood spoke with Proactive's Stephen Gunnion about gold’s outlook after its recent pullback, the potential impact of US midterm elections and the case for gold mining stocks. Halewood attributed gold’s retreat towards US$4,000 an ounce to wider market selling, portfolio shifts, higher oil prices and rising interest rates, which have made yield-bearing assets more attractive. Despite the weakness, he highlighted central bank buying as a key source of support, citing Goldman Sachs estimates that purchases reached around 79 tonnes in August - more than four times pre-2022 averages. The discussion covered forecasts for a recovery by year-end, including Goldman Sachs’ US$4,650 an ounce target and Bank of America’s US$4,250 projection. Halewood also explained how the US midterms could influence inflation, market confidence and investor positioning. Turning to gold miners, he outlined how mining shares can offer leveraged exposure to gold prices, while improving free cash flow, buybacks and dividends add to their appeal. He also discussed distributing and accumulating funds, and how reinvested payouts can contribute to total returns.
