Duratec Ltd managing director Chris Oates talked with Proactive about the company’s growth outlook, its expanding order book and opportunities across defence, energy, mining and infrastructure. Oates said Duratec operates across complex engineering remediation and construction, with key market exposure to defence, mining, building and facades, energy and emerging infrastructure areas including roads, water, wastewater and marine ports. Defence and energy remain major areas of focus. Oates highlighted opportunities linked to defence infrastructure in Western Australia, including work associated with the rotational force, the nuclear-powered submarine program, Garden Island and future infrastructure development at Henderson. He also pointed to increasing attention on fuel storage and fuel movement in Australia as a potential driver for the company’s energy activities. He said the order book had increased from around $390 million to $650 million, providing the company with greater visibility heading into FY27. Oates also highlighted gross margins approaching 20% and an improvement in EBITDA margin, while noting that headline revenue in FY26 had not reached the company’s expectations because some projects remained in the early contractor involvement phase longer than anticipated. Duratec is also considering further strategic M&A, particularly across defence, energy and mining, with an emphasis on expanding its East Coast presence. Queensland, New South Wales, the Pacific and Papua New Guinea were among the regions discussed. Oates also outlined potential work associated with Brisbane’s 2032 Olympics, including infrastructure, stadium maintenance and restoration projects.
