HANetf Active ETF Product Specialist Vincent Chung spoke with Proactive's Stephen Gunnion about volatility in technology markets and how active covered call strategies can seek to generate income when uncertainty increases. Chung highlighted a recent sell-off in semiconductor and technology stocks triggered by comments about potentially slowing the pace of AI development amid safety concerns, noting the Philadelphia Semiconductor Index fell almost 6% on the day while the VIX rose around 5% - illustrating technology markets' sensitivity to changing AI investment expectations. He explained why volatility matters for option income strategies: investors generally pay more for options when uncertainty about future price movements rises, meaning active managers selling calls can potentially capture higher premiums and generate higher income. "Whilst you're sort of waiting, why not also monetise some of the volatility and make some, you know, decent income," Chung said. He also highlighted the distinction between index-level and individual stock-level option writing, with an active stock-level approach allowing a portfolio manager to target securities with higher implied volatility, such as Nvidia, particularly around earnings season. Chung stressed that the investment case doesn't depend on volatility staying permanently elevated. Instead, the strategy offers flexibility to monetise volatility when it appears while retaining equity exposure and the potential for capital appreciation.
