Brazilian Critical Minerals Ltd (ASX:BCM) managing director Andrew Reid spoke with Proactive's Stephen Gunnion about the Ema rare earths project, its in-situ recovery (ISR) process, project economics and the key milestones ahead as the company advances development. Reid said Ema is distinctive because BCM plans to apply in-situ recovery, a technique widely used for rare earth extraction in Southeast Asia but not currently applied to comparable projects in the Western world. Discussing the project's economics, Reid highlighted the simplicity and cost-effectiveness of ISR, which removes the need for many conventional mining activities and infrastructure, including open-pit mining, large mining fleets, haul roads, waste dumps and tailings dams. "The key drivers of all those things is the actual in-situ recovery process itself. It's very simple, it's very streamlined, and it's extremely cost-effective," he said. He also discussed the use of magnesium sulfate, commonly known as Epsom salts, as the reagent in the project's leaching process, and what this could mean for Ema's environmental footprint. BCM is now progressing Ema into FEED, with detailed design work expected to feed into local engineering work in Brazil before packages can be awarded to vendors. Reid also discussed progress on land titles and environmental permitting following the public hearing in Apuí. Looking ahead, Reid identified environmental permitting, an offtake agreement, project financing, detailed design and the awarding of construction packages as key steps towards development and eventual first product from Ema.
