HANetf's Harry Halewood: Europe's AI opportunity goes beyond the big-name developers

Episode Summary

HANetf product specialist for the Making Europe Great Again ETF, Harry Halewood, spoke with Proactive's Stephen Gunnion about how Europe could benefit from AI's growth, with infrastructure, computing capacity and investment potentially creating opportunities beyond the programming and development segment dominated by the US and China. Halewood said that while attention often focuses on major developers like OpenAI, Anthropic and DeepSeek, AI requires significant supporting infrastructure - an area where Europe is already seeing investment in data factories, supercomputers and computing capacity. "There's more to the AI universe than that, and there's lots of supporting infrastructure that's required to keep those big names ticking along," he said. He highlighted the EuroHPC high-performance computing joint venture, noting Europe's compute capacity is set to triple over its lifetime, with planned AI gigafactories set to expand it further. Halewood also pointed to potential secondary benefits from AI adoption, with Europe's strong exposure to finance, pharmaceuticals and broader industry positioning companies to gain from efficiency and process improvements. Current examples include European data centre initiatives and Mistral's plans to expand compute capacity, with demand currently outstripping supply. On financing, Halewood cited EuroHPC's €8.2 billion budget running from 2021 to 2027, as well as InvestAI - a planned €200 billion initiative combining €50 billion of public funding with the aim of encouraging around €150 billion in private investment.
