Gelion CEO: QinetiQ drone testing proves lithium-sulfur cells can go the distance

Episode Summary

Gelion PLC (AIM:GELN, OTC:GELNF, FRA:X0S) CEO Matthew Wood spoke with Proactive's Stephen Gunnion about the successful completion of drone mission testing with QinetiQ, highlighting the performance of Gelion's nano-encapsulated sulfur (NES) cathode material in lithium-sulfur cells. QinetiQ independently built and tested pouch cells using Gelion's NES cathode paired with lithium metal anodes, as part of the Advanced Route to Market Demonstrator 4 (ARMD4) programme funded by the UK's Advanced Propulsion Centre. The cells completed representative drone mission simulations, including repeated vertical take-off and landing events requiring extremely high-power discharge, plus cruising conditions demanding continuous stable performance. Wood said there was no evidence of polysulfide shuttle behaviour, with NES-containing cells performing almost identically at cycle 50 as at cycle one despite repeated aggressive missions: "These results demonstrate that lithium sulfur cells containing our NES cathode material can deliver the stable cycling and strong high power performance that is required by drone mission profiles and, importantly, can do so durably." Wood pointed to relevance beyond defence drones, including other defence applications, commercial drones and lightweight, high-power uses where energy density and weight matter. He also highlighted stable operation over 200 cycles at a 1C discharge - representative of EV power requirements - supporting NES's case for automotive applications.
