Digbee founder Jamie Strauss and Deutsche E-Metalle AG CEO Dr Micha Zauner talked with Proactive's Stephen Gunnion about how independent ESG assessments are shaping the future of lithium development in Argentina and globally. Zauner detailed why Deutsche E-Metalle AG commissioned another Digbee ESG report for its flagship Carachi Blanco lithium brine project in the Puna region of Argentina. “The main reason was to get further local community engagement,” he said, highlighting how this transparency helps secure stakeholder support across Europe, the US, and Argentina. He explained that off-takers now often require ESG assessments before even signing a memorandum of understanding, noting “those required Digbee assessments or similar ones for ESG criteria.” The report also enabled cooperation with other local mining firms and reinforced their aim to lead in sustainable lithium extraction. Strauss added that DEM’s proactive ESG efforts represent a strategic advantage. “They’ve not only committed to embracing sustainability, but they’ve also de-risked that project,” he said. He cited industry statistics showing that most projects fail before production, emphasising DEM’s forward planning. Zauner concluded that the company intends to expand this ESG-focused model to future projects, asserting that true ESG commitment pays off over the long term.
