Altech Batteries Secures Key German Licensing Approval

Episode Summary

Altech Batteries Ltd CFO Martin Stein talked with Proactive about the company’s recent milestone—securing final licensing approval for its CERENERGY battery plant in Germany. This approval marks a crucial step, allowing Altech to proceed with construction once financing is secured. Stein explained the significance of grid storage batteries in stabilising renewable energy supply and outlined the advantages of Altech’s sodium fluoride-based CERENERGY batteries. Unlike traditional lithium-based solutions, these batteries are fire-safe and free from critical minerals like lithium, cobalt, and graphite. Discussing financing, Stein highlighted Altech’s engagement with corporate advisors KPMG to secure equity and debt partners. He also noted potential government grants and subsidies in Germany, though political transitions have created some uncertainty. Despite this, Stein expressed confidence in securing funding, backed by offtake agreements for the plant’s first five years of production. With an estimated 18-24 month construction timeline, Altech aims to play a key role in Europe's transition to sustainable energy storage solutions.
